The woman, considerably shorter than her assigned mount, shifted anxiously in the waiting area. The
amount of time it had taken to prepare the young Shedu for this one test was incredible. Chiren had
spent a great deal of time grooming him to perfection, something Ghost thought would have been put
to better use in the Korung test, saddling him carefully and lecturing him on behavior on the track.
Chike was larger, heavier-set than most of the cats ahead of him and who would surround him. His
bright, lively, orange eyes watched the sleek, light built Shedus line up as they were bid, their riders
already set on their backs while his own still fidgetted with her helmet and twisted her fingers in his
full mane.

"Relax, Ghost. You guys are going to be fine." Ghost rolled her eyes. If only Chiren knew just how
on edge Ghost could get before a thoroughbred race- something she was familiar with. Chiren shook her
collection of red and white dread locks and grinner, hugging her Shedu before giving her rider and
friend a leg up into the saddle. Chike, panting with anticipation, started forward, grunting and huffing
when Chiren pulled him back. She put a hand on Ghosts foot. "Really, just do what you guys do
best. Get into your pole position and set in for the run. He's only going to go as fast as he
can so there's no point in trying to make him go faster than he's capable of."
 unsaid was the
whole "it'd be stupid to enter this test and not get a result because he couldn't complete it" argument.

"Yeah, right." Ghost cricked her neck, pulled her half-mask up and settled her helmet in place. She
nodded to Chiren who finally released her Shedu and the two started walking at a slower pace than
Chike cared for. It would have been a very sedate pace if he hadn't been bending and twisting and
doing everything he could to get where he wanted to go faster than a walk. Ghost clucked at him as
they reached their assigned starting point.

She would have looked back at Chiren if the helmet would let her, but it didn't, so Ghost focused on
the pair beside them and the track ahead of them, bracing herself for the inevitable lurch when the
cats would take off. She knew the feeling, it was so familiar to her from thoroughbreds. When it came
it was without the bolting rears and bucks that many thoroughbreds she'd sat had given when the
gates open. It was a clean break and Chike adored it. He stretched his toes wide with each stride,
grasping the loose dirt of the track and sinking his claws into it before pushing off, sending clods of
earth flying behind them.

He grinned a feline grin as she stretched him out, crouched low over his shoulders and rocking to
keep her center of balance aligned with his own as he swept into a large, long oval turn. She shifted,
using her weight to adjust his position across the track rather than turning his head. He moved over
two steps and settled into the groove she'd found for him. His heart racing, his lungs pumping wildly
for the air he took with each breath and stride and he didn't just run be bound with great, extended,
leaping strides. Opening his gate up as far as he could until the angle between his legs at their
widest point was nearly flat. Well, Ghost thought with a smile hidden behind her mask, at least he
loves his job.
